The Red Lion Public House , now a large Victorian building in the heart of the historic village of St Peters, is steeped in history. Many hundreds of years ago, on this site, there was a single storey thatched building, which served as a smallpox hospital ! Indeed, in the cellars there is still the original mortuary, replete with its slate shelves where the unfortunate victims were laid to rest. However, nothing more than our wine collection uses the facilities nowadays ! There are tunnels, long ago sealed, which went from our cellars to the Churchyard opposite, and radiated throughout St Peters - and even into Broadstairs, in the hey-day of the Smuggling trade...
These days, we aim to provide a traditional village hostelry, with the emphasis on embodying old fashioned hospitality, so often lacking these days, a warm comfortable and welcoming atmosphere, and of course, quality well presented food and drink, by experienced and professional team members. We have extensive experience in providing quality, locally sourced home cooked food, whether it be our Daily Bar Lunches, Traditional Roast Sunday Lunches, or our Buffet Menus for your party or special occasion, in our Function Suite. We have many letters and cards of appreciation from satisfied customers. We have had the same resident, Thanet College trained Chef since coming to The Red Lion 9 years ago.We welcome dogs in our Pub - going as far as to having a doggie biscuit jar on the bar ! We have a light and airy comfortable Lounge Bar - with traditional furnishings & fresh flowers - we provide complimentary daily newspapers - have free high speed wireless internet access - we have free bar snacks daily, together with our usual free Sunday Lunch Bar Buffet.
We have regular live entertainment most week-ends - see the news page for details of forthcoming events. We pride ourselves on providing a very "Female Friendly" culture - having a light and airy Lounge Bar - complimentary toiletries and fresh flowers in the washrooms, and serving a delicious range of quality speciality coffees - whipped chocolate and teas - all day. We also offer a selection of chilled wines by the glass or bottle - so why not come along and meet with friends. Maybe have a bite of Lunch. Our Bar Lunches are served daily from 12 until 2pm. We offer our new BAR LUNCH MENU - . We serve a Traditional Roast Sunday Lunch, either in the Bar Area or in our First Floor Restaurant from 12:15 until 2:30pm - booking is highly advisable to avoid disappointment. Our First Floor Restaurant is always available for you to book for any special meal for family and friends, lunchtime or evening - by special arrangement, when we would be pleased to arrange your personalised menu. We have invested in a unique sheltered outside area with working brick fireplace and electric infra-red heaters, and comfortable seating - literally taking the inside out ! Surely one of the best smoking areas around, so we are told frequently. We also have a large patio area with giant parasol again with lighting and infra red heating - altogether we have seating for 70 people in our 3 outside areas.
We have clean, modern washrooms - with fresh flowers and complimentary toiletries. We also have a large private car park to the rear of the property. We are always pleased to offer our Function Room to local societies or clubs for meetings - subject of course to availability
